Every year, countless families endure the deep pain of miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or infant loss. While these experiences are profoundly personal, they are heartbreakingly common—affecting an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies.

Today, we join together to break the silence, honor the grief, and recognize the quiet strength it takes to heal. Whether by lighting a candle, sharing a story, or simply listening with compassion, every act of remembrance reminds families that they are never alone in their loss. 💗

Practicing Self-Compassion

As therapists we believe self-compassion is a skill that directly supports mental health and resilience. Research shows that when we criticize ourselves harshly, our brain reacts as if we are under threat—activating stress hormones like cortisol and reinforcing cycles of shame and avoidance. In contrast, when we treat ourselves with kindness and understanding, the nervous system begins to calm, making space for clearer thinking, problem-solving, and healing.

It’s important to understand that self-compassion is not the same as self-indulgence or ignoring responsibility. Instead, it’s about responding to our struggles in a balanced way—acknowledging mistakes, pain, or setbacks without layering on additional self-judgment. Approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) emphasize how shifting our self-talk from critical to compassionate can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression while increasing motivation for healthy change.

One powerful tool often recommended is Kristin Neff’s Self-Compassion Break. This short, evidence-based exercise guides you through three steps: Mindfulness, Common humanity and Self-kindness. This practice helps you pause, notice your pain, and intentionally respond with warmth rather than judgment.

If self-compassion feels difficult, remember it is like building a muscle—it strengthens with practice. Start by noticing your inner dialogue and asking: “Would I say this to someone I care about?” If not, gently reframe it in a more supportive way. Exercises like the Self-Compassion Break or journaling moments of self-kindness are small steps that create big changes over time. Self-compassion is not weakness—it’s a therapeutic pathway that helps regulate emotions, fosters resilience, and supports long-term healing.

Life can get overwhelming, and our thoughts sometimes pull us out of the present moment. Today, we’re sharing a simple grounding tool to help you reconnect with your body, calm your mind, and find steadiness right where you are.

When emotions begin to feel overwhelming, it can be hard to stay present in your body and mind. A helpful way to calm your nervous system is through a grounding practice called the “5–4–3–2–1” technique. By intentionally engaging your five senses, you give your brain something concrete to focus on, which can reduce spiraling thoughts and bring a sense of steadiness.

Start by noticing five things you can see around you—shapes, colors, or details you might normally overlook. Then bring attention to four things you can physically feel—the texture of your clothing, the ground beneath your feet, or the sensation of your breath. Next, tune in to three things you can hear, whether close by or in the distance. Shift your awareness to two things you can smell, even if they are subtle or faint. Finally, notice one thing you can taste in the present moment.

This simple but powerful practice helps anchor you in your environment and gently reminds your body that you are safe in the here and now.

And this week we’re exploring the power of breathwork—an accessible practice to help reset your body and mind each day.

One of the most powerful tools you carry with you at all times is your breath. It may seem simple, but the way we breathe has a direct effect on our nervous system.

When life feels overwhelming, your breath can be used as a signal to your body that it is safe to slow down. For example, inhaling deeply for four counts, holding gently for four, and then exhaling slowly for six allows your system to shift from a state of stress into a state of calm.

This type of intentional breathing helps regulate the heart rate, lowers tension in the muscles, and creates space for the mind to refocus on the present moment.

Even just a few rounds can make a noticeable difference, reminding you that you have an accessible, effective way to ground yourself—no special tools or preparation needed, just your own body working with you.

The day after National Overdose Awareness Day hits even harder than the day itself. Yesterday we remembered lives lost. Today, we wake up still carrying the weight of those empty spaces in our hearts.

Donnie was more than his struggles. He was an amazing son, brother, uncle, and friend. His smile was infectious, his charisma could light up any room. He loved sports, played varsity water polo, and despite the battles he faced, he proudly graduated high school.

Donnie had dreams he didn’t get to finish chasing. 🤍🕊️

He fought hard. He experienced sobriety. And even in that short time, we saw his light shine. But addiction is a disease that steals futures. It left us with holes in our hearts that can never be filled. If love could have saved him, just one look from his mom would have been enough.

Today, we honor Donnie and every life gone too soon. We also fight for those still struggling. Talk about addiction. Share resources. Show compassion. Break the stigma. If you or someone you love is battling addiction, please reach out for help. You are not alone.

As therapists, we often remind clients: rest is part of the work. Our culture glorifies constant productivity, but your mind and body aren’t built for nonstop output. When you allow yourself space to rest, you’re not “falling behind”—you’re creating the conditions for mental clarity, emotional regulation, and better problem-solving.

But here’s an important reminder: rest doesn’t mean endless doom scrolling. Our brains need breaks from constant stimulation too. Social media can keep your nervous system on high alert, even when you think you’re “relaxing.” Instead, choose activities that truly restore you—deep breathing, a short walk, listening to calming music, or just sitting quietly.

Think of rest as a reset button for your nervous system. Slowing down signals safety to your body, reducing stress hormones and helping you return to your day with focus and presence.

Today, ask yourself: What does real rest look like for me right now? Put down the phone for a few minutes and notice the difference. Rest isn’t a luxury. It’s essential self-care. 🌿

Cindy describes herself as an elder millennial therapist and a second-generation Asian American who grew up as the middle child in a strict household. Since childhood, she felt pulled to forge her own path, even when it meant facing tension and resistance for going against expectations. That experience continues to shape both her life and her work. As a therapist, she takes a culturally aware, trauma-informed, and mind-body approach. Cindy is passionate about helping people navigate anxiety and other overwhelming life experiences- while helping them identify and connect more to their truths.

Outside of sessions, Cindy loves traveling. She visited over 20 countries so far, with France holding a special place in her heart. She’s made it a personal quest to explore as many Gothic cathedrals in Europe as possible. Music is another outlet of joy; Cindy loves indulging my inner teenager at emo night concerts and recently saw My Chemical Romance on their stadium tour. To decompress, Cindy practices qi gong and somatic work, and she stays grounded through meditation and ancestral veneration. Other fun facts, she love the Food Network even though she don’t prefer to cook. She also took French for 8 years though feels she still speaks it like a beginner.

At her core, Cindy believes life is meant to be lived fully- without shame, insecurities, or the past holding us back. She feels her greatest inspiration as a therapist is helping people uncover blind spots, reconnect with their authentic selves, and move past what limits them so they can live their truth.

Welcome to another Wellness Wednesday!

Today we want to bring attention to the Mind-Body Connection specifically stress in the body.

Stress doesn’t just live in our thoughts—it often shows up in our bodies too. Notice where you’re carrying tension today (jaw, shoulders, stomach) and take a moment to breathe into that space. Your body is always communicating with you.

When we hold stress in the body, it’s often a sign that our nervous system is in a heightened state of alert, sometimes called the ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Gentle practices like releasing the jaw, rolling the shoulders, or slowing the breath through the belly can help engage the parasympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for rest and recovery. This shift supports both physical ease and emotional regulation.”

Here are different simple techniques you can do to help release stress from these parts of your body:

👉 Jaw:
• Gently unclench your teeth and let your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth
• Massage along your cheeks and temples in small circles
• Take a slow breath while softly opening and closing your jaw

👉 Shoulders:
• Roll your shoulders up, back, and down a few times
• Stretch your arms overhead and take a deep breath in
• On the exhale, let your shoulders drop away from your ears

👉 Stomach:
• Place one hand on your belly and practice slow, deep breathing
• Focus on letting your abdomen rise as you inhale and soften as you exhale
• Try lying down with one hand on your chest and one on your stomach to feel the breath move through your body

Practicing these exercises will help reduce and prevent stress build up. Though it’s also important to maintain a healthy stress meter and not allow yourself to become overwhelmed by it.
Remember that your mental health is very important and to treat your mind and body with kindness.
